PALMA

In Palma on Wednesday (31st) it’s the Festival of the Standard, which commemorates King Jaume I’s troops’ arrival in Palma – and the end of Moorish rule. The festival dates from the 13th century and starts with the ceremonial placing of the Royal Standard in Plaça Cort at 10.15am, followed by a mass in the Cathedral. At noon the poem ‘La Colcada’ is read in Plaça Cort, with a performance by the Mallorcan School of Music and Dance.

Plaça Cort is the location for Palma’s traditional New Year’s Eve Party, which starts at 11pm. There’s a DJ and live entertainment to keep the party going, with the traditional midnight countdown – and it’s all free. Take your own drinks and lucky grapes.

The Moscow Ballet returns for the first weekend of 2015, to perform two classic ballets at Palma Auditorium. On Saturday evening at 9pm, they dance ‘Swan Lake; and on Sunday at 7pm, it’s the festive favourite, ‘The Nutcracker Suite’. Tickets are available from the auditorium box office on online from their website www.auditoriumpalma.com.

A reminder that the Ice Park in Palma, at the park next to the railway and bus station is open every day from 10am until 10pm, if you fancy bringing out your inner Torvill and Dean. You must wear gloves to take part though. The rink will be in place until Sunday, January 25th, so still plenty of time!

Vienna is home to the world’s best-known New Year’s Day concert, but Palma de Mallorca has its own version – to be celebrated for the 25th time on January 1st at 8.30pm. Felipe Aguirre conducts the Balearic Symphony Orchestra in this special anniversary concert, featuring popular classics from Strauss, Rossini, Offenbach and others. Tickets: 40 & 50 euros from the Trui Teatre, where the performance is taking place.

The circus is in town – but with a difference. Circo Alegria on Ice is on at Son Fusteret in Palma and is a great family show (in Spanish). Tickets are just 8 euros from their box office, with special prices for children of 10 and under. www.circoalegria.es
