PALMA
Europeos por España has organised an event for this Wednesday, June 25th in Palma. It’s meeting with Jaime Ochogavia Colom, Balearic Government’s director general for industry and energy, to discuss the cost of electricity in the Balearics, alternative energy, and the oil and gas prospecting around the Balearics. The Barcelona-based author Goldie Nanwani, who graduated in the UK, will be signing copies of her debut book ‘Thoughts Translated’ this Thursday, June 26th at the English bookshop ‘Come In’ on Palma’s Calle Miquel. If you’d like to meet her, the event starts at 7pm.

BENDINAT

A new art exhibition opens this week at the Hotel Bendinat, featuring paintings and sculptures by Velcha Velche. You are invited to the exhibition opening cocktail this Thursday, June 26th at 6.30pm.

DEIA
The Deia International Music Festival continues this week with a performance by the Camera Deia on Thurday, 26th at Son Marroig. They will play works by Beethoven, Puccini, Reger, Sibelius and Boccherini. Concert starts at 8.30pm. More info on www.dimf.com 

ANDRATX

CCA Andratx has a new exhibition opening this Friday, June 27th, featuring the work of resident artists Bernhard Brungs and Slawomir Elsner – who will be present at the inauguration. If you’d like to go along, CCA Andratx looks forward to seeing you at 7pm.

PORTOCOLOM
This coming weekend it’s the third octopus fair in Portocolom – an event that starts on Friday 27th and continues through until Sunday. If you love eating octopus the Fira Gastronomica del Pop de Portocolom is a must.

CANYAMEL

The University Choir of the Balearic Islands is performing Brahms’ ‘A German Requiem’ in the setting of the Torre de Canyamel in the northeast of the island on July 5th. The concert is a fundraiser for two cancer charities on Mallorca: DIME – the association of palliative care volunteers – and Angeles Sin Alas. PALMA

The Georgie Insull Singers present their summer concert, ‘Midsummer Melodies’ this Friday, June 20th at the Anglican Church in Palma. The performance starts at 8pm and tickets are 10 euros. Book yours in advance by calling 639 750 240.

Do you have a baby or small children? You may be interested in the new PJs Singing Group – a chance for babies and toddlers to sing nursery rhymes together with their parents or carers – and for the grown-ups to have a good chat too. Coffee and squash are served, included in the price of 2 euros a session. PJs Singing Group meets Thursday at 10.30am and Saturdays at 10am – both sessions last about an hour. All are welcome – just turn up at the Coleman Hall at the appropriate time.

This Friday, June 20th, the Palma-based music conservatory’s Orquesta Sinfónica performs Debussy’s ‘Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun’, Rachmaninoff’s variations of ‘Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini’, and the world premiere of Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez’s concerto for piano. Martínez is also guest conductor, and Leonel Morales the invited piano soloist.  There’s free entrance to this concert, which starts at 8pm at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de les Illes Balears in Palma. The four-day Superyacht Cup Palma 2014 starts this Wednesday, June 18th and you’ll see some of the most prestigious sailing yachts from around the world taking part in the Bay of Palma. The sailing yachts are moored in the Superyacht Cup Regatta Village at the Moll Vell when they’re not racing.

PORRERES

Porreres is renowned not just for its wines, but also for its sweet and juicy apricots, and on Saturday 21st, they celebrate this fruit with the 2nd Apricot Fair, taking place in the town from 12 noon onwards. There’ll be plenty of chances to taste the fruit and lots of stalls and displays to enjoy.

The Son Vida Café concert cultural series continues tonight (Tuesday, 10th) with a free jazz concert on the terrace of the Castillo Hotel Son Vida, where there are spectacular views over Palma and the bay. The concert features saxophonist Llibert Fortuny and pianist Manel Camp. Drinks will be available during the concert at reduced prices. The 7th Pianino classical music festival in Valldemossa continues this Saturday, June 14th with pianist Óscar Caravaca and violinist Francisco García Fullana playing music by Chausson, Isang Yun, Janácek, Chopin, Davidovsky and Beethoven. PALMA NOVA

This Saturday (14th), you’re invited to the Feed a Child Coffee Morning in Palma Nova. It’s taking place in the San Lorenzo Hall (next to the Palma Nova Palace Hotel) and starts at 10.30am. Entry is 4 euros and includes all the tea and coffee you want and a slice of homemade cake. There’ll also be various stalls to tempt you. Proceeds from this event will go to help feed orphaned children in Peruvian shantytowns.

PUERTO PORTALS

The 3rd Aquatlon in Puerto Portals is this Sunday, June 15th. Organised by Elitechip, the event consists of a run of 3 km, followed by a 1 km swim, then another 3 km run. PALMA

If you're a movie and cinema buff, an exhibition in Palma could be of interest. It reveals the cultural, aesthetic and technical roots of pioneering French film-maker Georges Méliès, dubbed the First Wizard of Cinema. He directed more than 500 films and invented numerous cinematic special effects. Exhibits on loan from the CinémathèqueFrançaise, include Méliès's first camera and other items from cinema's early days. The exhibition is on until September 7th, at CaixaForum.

This Thursday in Palma (June 5th) is the day ofPalmaPhoto 2014 – which showcases thebest of photographic art. It's organized by the same people responsible for Palma Art Brunch in spring and Nit de l'Art in September. More than 20 galleries and art centres in the heart of Palma are taking part. SELVA

The annual herb fair or 'Fira de sesHerbes' is this weekend in the village of Selva, near Inca, with most of the activity in the attractive square, where colourful stalls are set up. Anything that can be made with herbs – from soaps to liquers – can be found at this event, which is on Saturday and Sunday, starting around 11am each morning.

Feeling a bit stressed? Then this month's workshop from Health Matters could be of interest as it's about sound meditation. Gong and Didge Mallorca will demonstrate the sounds and vibrations of the gong and didgeridoo, and some deep relaxation and meditation techniques. PALMA

This week it’s the 3rdMareMostra International Film Festival, focused on the sea and cinema, with more than 70 films being screened between now and May 31st. The festival happens in Palma with screenings at Sala Augusta, Caixa Forum and Cine Ciutat in Palma.  Tickets for single screenings are 3 euros and can be bought at the Sala Augusta or CineCiutat box offices, but there are multi-ticket options too. "Inventions. Ideas that change lives" is the title of an interesting exhibition about some of the mostrevolutionary inventions in use in Africa, Asia and Latin America – solving problems related to energy, food, health, a healthy environment and access to drinking water. The exhibition can be visited at CaixaForum in Palma until Sunday, June 22nd.

If you love Zumba, don’t miss Respirapor Zumba – a fundraiser for the FundacionRespiralia, which supports those with cystic fibrosis. It’s happening this Saturday, May 31st at Profitness Urban Club in Palma from 11am until 1pm and again from 5pm until 7pm. Twelve different Zumba leaders will run sessions during these times and you can attend one session for 3 euros or four sessions for 5 euros. All proceeds will go to the FundacionRespiralia.

The opening concert of the 36th DeiaInternational  Music Festival is this Thursday, May 29th. Polish pianist Joanna Trzeciak will play works by Beethoven, Hummel and Chopin in the lovely setting of Son Marroig. The recital starts at 8.30pm and you can find out more on www.dimf.com

BENDINAT

The Hotel Bendinat has its usual series of art exhibitions over the summer months and on Saturday night (May 31st) they have the inauguration cocktail for their next exhibition, which features paintings by Daniel Cordorniu. If you’d like to go along, it starts at 6.30pm.

CAMPOS

The Mallorca Meditation Festival is just a couple of weeks away and open to anyone who wants to share, learn or deepen their knowledge of meditation and other techniques. There are lots of activities happening throughout the four-day event, including yoga, dance, concerts, vegetarian and vegan food, chill-out areas, massages and alternative therapies. The Festival is taking place near Campos, at FincaCa’nCorem, a renovated old farm, not far from EsTrenc beach. It starts at 4.30pm on Thursday, June 5th and ends on Sunday, June 8th at 7pm.
